Hello, my name is Ally and I am 14 years old. When I was just 4 months old my parents started to notice my reactions to certain foods they would feed me, so they took me to a food allergist. At a very young age I was diagnosed with allergies to soy, shellfish, dairy, eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts. For the first couple years of my life, there wasn’t much awareness around food allergies so it was a bit overwhelming for my parents to navigate this unknown terrain. My mom has always been my biggest advocate in finding new allergy-friendly recipes to cook, making sure I was safe in restaurants, all while finding new foods for me to try. Now that I’m getting older I can see the increased awareness around food allergies, compared to even a decade ago. I eventually outgrew my soy allergy, but I became allergic to some fruits and vegetables recently, which makes me allergic to 4 out of the 8 major allergens. I know what its like to live with allergies, so I feel I am an ally for parents, individuals, friends, teachers, coaches, and anyone interested in making life safe and inclusive for those affected. If you’re wondering how I ended up with these allergies in the first place I honestly don’t know. Other than my uncle, nobody else in my family has any food allergies. It’s definitely not easy being allergic to all of these things: believe me, I’ve had my share of allergy attacks. I’m also not the type of person who likes to create extra trouble for people, but when I go on vacation or eat at restaurants we have to ask a million questions to make sure I’m safe. Another thing I discovered recently that has really helped me (especially with travel) are the allergy cards I linked on this website. Make sure you check those out on the website (they’re under the advice tab). As you’ll see on this website, a lifetime of experience has allowed me to discover some great things that I want to share with others. There definitely is more of an awareness around food allergies, but there is still a lot more work that needs to be done. I hope to provide information and tools to increase food allergy awareness and safety.
